Involvement led the way for internship success

Carolyn LabadieCarolyn Labadie, a fourth-year student at Brescia, already has a year and a half of real world experience under her belt, thanks to the internship program she embraced at the end of her third year of study. In fact, she was Brescia's first student to assume a paid internship position through the Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies program (BMOS) at Brescia and through the internship program organized by The University of Western Ontario. She is paving the way for others to follow her lead.


Carolyn says the process in which she was selected to be a paid intern with Celestica for 16 months, “Was very much like applying for a real job. First, you need to be selected for the internship program and then you are invited to apply for suitable job postings advertised through Western. Once we saw jobs that interested us and for which we had the qualifications, we applied and if selected, were interviewed. Competition is rigorous and being well prepared is mandatory. I was fortunate enough to get a great job at Celestica that enabled me to learn so many skills-sets that are directly relevant to my field of study. It was hard work going through the process since no one at Brescia had ever done it before, but it was such a valuable experience.”



How did Carolyn follow this route? She simply fell in love with business at Brescia. She enthuses, “Carlie Forbes absolutely inspired me in my first year and I have had many wonderful professors since then, including Melissa Jean and Colleen Sharen. Through careful planning in my course selection, I was well prepared for this undertaking. My position as a Finance Learning and Development Analyst at Celestica was challenging, interesting, and came with a great deal of responsibility. As part of my learning experience, some of my responsibilities included: preparing, facilitating, and delivering courses for finance employees to help them maintain their professional accreditations; preparing monthly and quarterly communications to 500 global finance employees; and the opportunity to interview candidates to replace my internship position at Celestica.


Taking 16 months out of university to work full time means that I will graduate a year later than expected, but it has been worth it for many reasons. I now have accredited work experience and great references. When I graduate in June of 2012, my diploma will say Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies, Specialization in Human and Organizational Resources with Professional Internship.


I credit Brescia with so much of my good fortune. This is a place where students are encouraged to be engaged and to get involved. All the activities and things we do as students really make a huge difference in our lives. While we might not recognize this until we are offered a big opportunity, when one of these chances for growth arises, we are more than willing to go for it – mainly because we have been so encouraged to get involved at Brescia.”
