Students, Faculty, and Alumnae Honoured at Two Student Life Awards Ceremonies
The Student Life Centre at Brescia was thrilled to host the first-ever Student Leader Recognition Event this spring, which honours and recognizes outstanding leadership contributions made by students at Brescia. This year four recipients were recognized and awarded: Rosette Moore received the Outstanding Contribution to Campus Life Award; Dr. Alicia Garcia received the Campus Partner Appreciation Award; and within the Professional Mentoring Program, Huijun Chew received the Mentee of the Year Award and Kim Leacy received the Mentor of the Year Award at the year-end wrap-up.
Rosette Moore is the first Brescia student to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Campus Life Award, which is given to a student who displays innovative leadership in the Brescia community. Rosette exemplifies the vision and values of Brescia in her day-to-day interactions on campus, both inside and outside the classroom. Examples of her involvement in the Brescia community include being: a Brescia Student Ambassador; a Peer Writing Tutor; Vice President Communications of Brescia's Off-Campus Council; and a Girls LEAD Camp Counsellor. Rosette was also the recipient of the Brescia University College Spirit Award during the 2011-2012 school year. Janet Loughheed, a fellow peer of Rosette said, “Rosette holds the student body together, and links us together every day.”
Dr. Alicia Garcia, the recipient of the Student Life Centre's Campus Partner Appreciation award, has shown her strong support for the Centre over the last year, particularly through her participation in the past two Alternative Spring Break trips to the Dominican Republic. Emily Dobrich, a student who accompanied Dr. Garcia on the trip, said, “I consider it an honour and a privilege to have travelled with Dr. Garcia this past February. She shared her knowledge and experience from travelling to different and diverse areas of the world many times. It was clear she cared very much for everyone in our group and was very gracious with everyone in the Dominican Republic.”
The Professional Mentoring Program Mentor and Mentee of the Year Awards were introduced and will be awarded to two individuals each year. The Mentor of the year recipient was awarded to Kim Leacy, a Brescia alumna, who currently works as a Public Health Dietitian in Chronic Disease Prevention and Tobacco Control at the Middlesex-London Health Unit. Kim made an effort to attend all of the Program's events, as well as the Career Symposium, where she shared her experiences with a larger group of Brescia students as a panelist for the evening. The Mentee of the Year award was presented to Huijun Chew, who has been an active community builder at Brescia. Laure Eldik, who was Huijun’s mentor, said of Huijun, “She is a great and committed student who works hard to achieve her dreams.”
Manager of Student Engagement, Courtney McDonald, spoke about the recognition event and said, “Our work in the Student Life Centre is about creating purposeful and high impact learning experiences for students. The launch of our annual Student Leader Recognition Event in April was a way for us to recognize our students, campus partners, and alumnae who have made significant contributions to these learning experiences over the year. We are proud to recognize Rosette, Huijun, Dr. Alicia Garcia, and Kim for their tremendous involvement and commitment to making Brescia an amazing place for our students.”
