MScFN - Internship Stream

Students in Food & Nutrition Class

The Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition (MScFN) (Internship Stream) will provide you with a combination of advanced course work, intriguing research opportunities and practical experience through the accredited Internship Stream placements across southwestern Ontario and beyond. 

The MScFN (Internship Stream) program allows you to achieve a Master of Science degree and complete an Internship which is accredited by Dietitians of Canada in five terms (just under two years).  Successful completion of this program will allow you to pursue the further steps involved in becoming a Registered Dietitian in Canada.  For a complete list of the requirements to become a Registered Dietitian in Canada, please see the Dietitians of Canada website and the College of Dietitians of Ontario website.

Admission Requirements

You must meet the admissions criteria of The University of Western Ontario, School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and present:

  • Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition (Honors Specialization or equivalent), accredited by Dietitians of Canada
  • 1.0 undergraduate course in research methodology and statistics
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 78 per cent on the last 10 full-course equivalent credits
  • Relevant work and volunteer experience
  • Demonstrated English language proficiency if your first language is not English

Internship

You will have the opportunity to shape your individualized 52 week internship through liaising with the Internship Coordinator and the Graduate Program Coordinator on a regular basis.  The Internship Coordinator will ensure you have the opportunity to meet your dietetic competencies (required for registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario) while keeping your needs and career goals in mind when designing your Internship placements. 

Through the internship placements, you’ll develop competencies in the following areas:

  • Clinical nutrition
  • Community nutrition
  • Foodservice administration
  • Management
  • Research
  • Professional Practice
  • Communication

You’ll experience rich and dynamic internship placements in settings such as:

  • Community Health Centres
  • Hospitals
  • Family Health Teams
  • Long-term Care Homes
  • Public Health Units
  • Industry
  • Marketing Boards

Courses

You are required to take 3.0 courses over two terms:
Fall term:

  • FN 9111A- Current Issues and Controversies in Foods and  Nutrition
  • FN 9222A-Research Methods and Statistics
  • FN 9555A-Contemporary Issues in Foodservice Administration
  • FN 9711A-Nutritional Epidemiology (optional 4th course for Internship Stream)

Winter term:

  • FN 9444B-Advances in Clinical Nutrition
  • FN 9666B-Community Nutrition and Education
  • FN 9333B-Special Topics in Leadership and Management

Research

You will be matched with a Faculty Advisor, based on your interest areas, who will encourage, guide and supervise your research project over the full 5 terms of the program.  You will have the opportunity to contribute research findings to your profession and strengthen your research skills.
