MScFN - Thesis Stream

Are you a Registered Dietitian looking to expand your leadership and research skills through a Masters degree?  The Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition program (Thesis Stream) offers courses three days per week for two semesters and the opportunity to further strengthen your research skills through working on a Thesis under the guidance of a Faculty Advisor.  The program spans a total of five terms (just under two years). 

Faculty and staff within the Division of Food and Nutritional Sciences are student-centred and passionate about providing an invigorating learning environment, where students become empowered to pursue leadership and research opportunities wherever their careers take them.

This program will complement your dietetic practice and enhance your dietetic skills.

Admission Requirements

The Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition (MScFN), (Thesis Stream) is a full-time graduate program.

Applicants to the MScFN (Thesis Stream) program must meet the admissions criteria of The University of Western Ontario, School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and present:

  • Honors BSc in Foods and Nutrition from an accredited program (or equivalent)
  • 1.0 undergraduate course in research methodology and statistics
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 78% on the last 10 full-course equivalent credits
  • Relevant volunteer experience
  • Registered Dietitian status
  • Demonstrated English language proficiency if your first language is not English

Additional Criteria (Thesis Stream):

Applicants (Registered Dietitians) must meet selection criteria that evaluate the individual’s readiness for advanced practice, ability to plan an conduct research, and potential for leadership in the profession.  Experience and performance in professional practice will be given weight.  Communication skills, attitude, and commitment to undertake Master’s-level education will also be considered.

You are required to take 3.0 courses over two terms:

Fall Term:

  • FN 9111A- Current Issues and Controversies in Foods and  Nutrition
  • FN 9222A-Research Methods and Statistics
  • FN 9555A- Contemporary Issues in Foodservice Administration
  • FN 9711B- Nutritional Epidemiology

Winter Term:

  • FN 9333A-Special Topics in Leadership and Management
  • FN 9722B- Program Planning and Evaluation
  • FN 9822B-Research and Thesis Planning (Individually scheduled times with Faculty Advisor)

Thesis (completed over the full 5 terms of the program)

You will have the opportunity to pursue a research topic in your area of interest. You may collaborate with your employer to potential identify initiatives that could be used as practice-based research for your Thesis.  Your Faculty Advisor and an advisory committee will guide your research by giving you feedback and direction and challenging you to think of new ideas and directions.
