Co-Curricular Service-Learning
Service-learning is a great approach to volunteering, for it is reciprocal in nature. This means both you and the community have something to gain and offer each other. This allows you to provide assistance to the community while reaping the rewards of giving back, learning skills, making connections between your academics and future career goals, receiving a reference, and expanding your possibilities.
Alternative Break Program
The alternative break program places a group of Brescia women in foreign communities to engage in community service and experiential learning during their academic breaks (Otherwise known as Spring Break or Summer Break). Students perform short term projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment.
The objective of an Alternative Break program is to involve our Canadian students in community-based service projects which give students opportunities to learn about the problems faced by members of communities with whom they otherwise may have had little or no direct contact with. Being completely immersed into diverse environments enables participants to experience, discuss, and understand social issues in a significant way.
The intensity of the experience increases the likelihood that participants will transfer the lessons learned while away back to their own communities even after the Alternative Break ends. Brescia University College and the Department of Student Services are hopeful the alternative break program acts as a springboard into lifelong active citizenship... where the community becomes a priority in an individual's life decisions. Students must apply to this program after returning from Thanksgiving weekend. Please pick up your applications in Student Services. *
Beyond Ourselves
BEYOND OURSELVES is a living learning community for residence students interested in community involvement through the act of service-learning. Service-learning goes beyond charity and volunteerism; it encourages those involved to ask the hard questions and search for real solutions. Character Counts Certificate Series
Character Counts is a new program designed to inspire a culture of character (within Brescia University College and among the local London community), using the six pillars of character (Trustworthiness; Respect; Responsibility; Fairness; Caring; and Citizenship) as its foundational building blocks. Students can expect to look further into the six pillars of character and learn effective tools such as better decision making, which will assist student during difficult times. Because it is during difficult times our sense of character is tested and sometimes lost. *
Homework Clubs and Literacy Programs
Research has confirmed that group tutoring helps children learn and grow as individuals. Tutoring increases their self confidence and gives them a more positive outlook on school. Tutoring is a wonderful experience for Brescia students who are interested in a career in education.
If you would like to help a child at the elementary level to get over the hurdles of homework and skill building, this program could be for you. Brescia students tutor one day a week for an hour and make a significant difference in a child's life. *
Nutritional Initiatives for Kids (NIK)
Lets think about a healthy tomorrow –TODAY!
This is a Co-Curricular Service-Learning program designed for Brescia University College, Food and Nutrition students.
As a member of NIK you will be part of a dedicated group that works together to actively learn about the health issues that youth face today. Once you feel confident in your understanding of the health issues of children between the ages of six to thirteen you will work with a team (of Brescia Food and Nutrition Science Students) to create a curriculum which will be delivered at a school placement. NIK partners with the London District School Board in order to deliver a workshop (created by Brescia students) encouraging younger students to have a healthy life style through nutrition and fitness. *
