Foods and Nutrition Program
The Foods and Nutrition program is a Bachelor of Science degree and is also considered a professional program. Foods and Nutrition is offered through the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences. Honors graduates will have completed the academic requirements to qualify as a Registered Dietitian. The program integrates natural sciences, social sciences and arts with business and professional skills to address the needs of individuals, families and society. All students take a series of "core" courses to acquire professional skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, business practices and management, teamwork, communication, research, judgment and ethics.
Along with the course work requirements, students are encouraged to volunteer in their community. Students work through their association, the Student Human Ecology Association (SHEA), which operates a volunteer placement service. Volunteering allows students to participate in community work related to their classroom education.A junior branch of the Canadian Association of Food Service Professionals (CAFP) has been extremely active in providing students with another perspective on foods/nutrition-related careers. Student memberships are also available in Dietitians of Canada which provides students the opportunity to meet and network with professionals. The Peer Mentor program is a great way for upper year students to share information and advice with new incoming students. To learn more about the Peer Mentor Program, visit
