Women in Political Life
For the women’s movement, equal political representation has been a significant goal. However, in the last 90 years, the fifty percent threshold of representation in politics has eluded the movement. This has significant implications for the full and equal citizenship of women resulting in a number of debates regarding the nature of equality, citizenship, political power and whether equal representation in political institutions is worth the effort.
Under the Political Science program, the "Women in Political Life" course will examine these debates and the nature of women’s political representation from a number of perspectives: historical, biographical, theoretical and international. The intent of the course is to introduce students to the debates regarding women’s access to political power and give students the opportunity to explore more fully the conceptions of politics, citizenship, leadership and power.
