Brescia students post positive answers to 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

London, ON – Brescia results from the 2011 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) were very promising and reinforced the assumption that a small primarily undergraduate institution provides a nurturing and empowering environment for its students.

Fourth-year students

Of particular note was the confidence that fourth-year Brescia University College students have in their academic and co-curricular endeavours:

  • 85 % of senior students at Brescia attested to discussing ideas from readings or classes with others outside of class – 11% higher than those students in our peer group and 18% higher than Ontario comparator universities.
  • 76% of our students said that Brescia substantially encouraged contact among diverse peers, compared to 63% at comparator women’s colleges and 40% at Ontario comparator universities.
  • 75% positively rated their relationships with administrative personnel and offices, compared to 62% at women’s colleges and 49% at the Ontario universities in our comparator group.
  • 71% wrote at least one paper or report of 20 pages or more, 12% higher than comparator women’s universities and 14% higher than Ontario universities in our group.
  • By the time they became seniors, 77% of students at Brescia had participated in community service events or volunteer work.
  • 84% of seniors have talked to academic advisors and faculty about career plans and 95% of this group would choose Brescia again if they could start their university career over.

First-year students

Statistics from surveys completed by first-year Brescia students are similarly strong.

  • 84% of first-year Brescia students felt that Brescia placed a substantial emphasis on academics.
  • 77% of first-year Brescia students discuss ideas from reading or classes with others outside of class – 7 percentage points higher than at comparator women’s universities and 14 percentage points higher than at Ontario universities in our peer group.
  • 70% of first-year students positively rated their relationships with administrative personnel and offices, on par with women’s universities and 14% higher than Ontario university comparators.
  • 77% of first-year students reported that they discussed ideas from readings or classes with others, compared to 63% of students who do the same in Ontario university comparator universities and 70% in other women’s universities.
  • 84% of first-year students would choose Brescia again if they were to start their university career over.

Students at universities across Canada and the United States will be answering new survey questions for NSSE this spring.
