Mayor Fontana supports summer exchange between Hong Kong and Brescia
London, ON – In July, Brescia will be hosting a group of 37 girls from St. Paul’s Convent School in Hong Kong. Mayor Fontana believes Brescia and London will be outstanding hosts.
He says, “Innovation in leadership and team building is recognized as a key element to successfully accessing the global community. Brescia’s connection to young women looking to achieve that world and cultural experience will also allow London to showcase what it offers international students. London is privileged to be the home of such an outstanding and inclusive institution. Since it was first established, Brescia has educated and supported women. It remains true to its purpose and vision and continues to advance with a strong global presence.”
St. Paul’s Convent school from Hong Kong will be participating in a special edition of the Girls LEAD summer camp in July. The students will be arriving with four chaperones on July 1 and staying on campus through July 14. As part of the programming, the new camp curriculum incorporates both community and faculty involvement during the day and evening. The Grades 11 and 12 students will be exploring their own leadership potential in a positive, welcoming, and empowering environment.
“The purpose of the camp is enrichment for our students to learn about new cultures, which is in keeping with our core mission. In a positive, encouraging, and welcoming environment, the Girls LEAD camp reinforces the principle that girls have the potential to succeed in whatever way they choose,” says Brescia Registrar and Director of Student Affairs Marianne Simm.
Camp programming is divided into the following four streams: promoting physical and mental health; enhancing self-awareness and building self-confidence; connecting with others; and making change. Campers will participate in outdoor activities, active games, discussion, and healthy food preparation. Programming for Girls LEAD is inspired by Brescia’s Foods and Nutrition program and academic disciplines such as Community Development and Leadership.
Brescia University College, Canada’s only women’s university has been developing female leaders since 1919. The Girls LEAD camp was one of the first initiatives that grew out of the Institute for Women in Leadership (iWIL) in 2007 as a way to extend opportunities for leadership development to future female leaders.
