Groundbreaking Ceremony at Brescia brings excitement to campus
London, ON –Brescia University College will break ground on its largest building project to date — a new residence and dining pavilion — at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3.
Principal Colleen Hanycz will be joined by students, faculty, staff, alumnae, members of the Foundation, Council of Trustees, and guests at the building site beside Ursuline Hall.
The $31.1 million project was announced in October 2011 and is part of Brescia’s strategic plan, Living Leadership, which aims to transform Brescia over the next five years. Brescia Principal Colleen Hanycz explains, “Our new strategic plan has, as its overarching goal, to recruit 1,200 full-time students by 2015. At Brescia we have a first-rate residence system that is safe and nurturing but our new residence will be even more spectacular, and a bit larger, to accommodate our projected increase in student numbers. There will be many single rooms, accessible rooms, marché-style dining, and public spaces that are a joy to be in, with lots of natural light. And the whole residence will, we hope, earn a Green Globes designation in environmental sustainability upon completion.”
Speaking at the ceremony will be Principal Hanycz, Western University President Amit Chakma, Ward 6 Councillor Nancy Branscombe, Scotiabank representative Patrick Noonan, and Cornerstone Architecture principal on the project Alison Hannay. Outgoing Brescia Students’ Council President Meagan Zettler and incoming Students’ Council President Jazmyn Jensen will be on hand to make an important contribution to this project.
The event will feature the Town Crier, Bill Paul, who will be on hand to welcome and shepherd guests to the viewing area of the construction site. During the ceremony, we will be paying homage to Brescia students, who will present a time capsule, which will include photos, notes, and memorabilia from the past and present.
