FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, ON – As part of International Week at Western University, on Thursday, November 16th, 120 students from across London will gather in Brescia’s St. James Auditorium for the first-ever You Go Global Leaders event. A concept spearheaded by third-year Brescia student Grace Wu, the international speaker night event will feature a panel of presenters from a variety of backgrounds, including Canadian politician and community activist Olivia Chow, who will present a satellite keynote address on creating lasting change and ways to inspire community leadership.

“As an international student, who has studied and lived in London for over two years, I understand first-hand the challenges and obstacles international students can face within a new country,” says event creator Grace Wu. “It is my hope that this event will not only inspire international students to lead in making positive change in their communities, but that it will also bring people together and continue to build on the growing international student network within London.”

The You Go Global Leaders event is designed specifically for international students as a means for raising awareness around international education in the community. In addition to the keynote address provided by Olivia Chow, students will also hear from: working professional Jay Zhang; Western undergraduate student Marie Fiedler and high school student Raghad El Niwairi. The evening will end with a stage play.

The event was generously sponsored by the Smart and Caring Community Fund, within London Community Foundation, Libro Credit Union, CultureWorks, Western English Learner Centre, Fanshawe College, the London Language Institute and Brescia University College. All profits generated through ticket and event raffle sales will be directed to supporting the Emergency Relief for the Rohingya Refugees Project through Good Neighbors Canada.

“International students currently represent 14% of our total student population at Brescia,” says Christina Lord, International Program Co-ordinator. “We are incredibly proud of Grace’s leadership in bringing this idea to fruition and the important dialogue that the event will initiate. She is a shining example of the value and impact that international students bring to our campus and our community.”
