Thinking of Dropping a Course?

If you’re thinking of dropping a course, that’s okay! It’s important to do your research and be aware of drop deadlines to avoid academic penalty.
We have prepared some helpful tips to assist you in your decision in dropping a course:

Why Should I Drop a Course?

  • If you have not successfully completed the prerequisite(s) for the course (you are required to drop the course as per University Policy)
  • If you’re experiencing personal/medical difficulties that have/will prevent you from attending class for an extended period of time and these circumstances will affect your academic performance
  • If you have overextended yourself with extracurricular activities or are working too many hours at a part-time job
  • If you’ve made every effort to get help from your instructor to improve your grade without success

Review the drop deadline to drop your course(s) before the deadline and avoid academic penalty.

Submit a Degree Check to review your module requirements so you can stay on track for graduation and avoid dropping a required course for your module.

Course Load Status

  • Will dropping this course change you from a full-time status (3.5 credits or more) to a part-time status (3.0 credits or less)?
  • Your course load can affect OSAP, Student Fees, Student Visa status, Varsity Athletics eligibility and Continuing Scholarship eligibility
Residency Requirements

  • As a full time Brescia student, you need to maintain at least 60% of your course load (3.0) credits at Brescia.
  • If you are a part time student, you need to maintain at least 50% of your course load credits at Brescia.
Consider the Grade you May Receive

  • Will this negatively impact your academic average, your academic goals or future options?
  • Are you on Academic Probation?
  • Interested in a Graduate or Professional Program with a certain admissions average or pre-requisite requirement?
  • Dean’s Honour List status?

  • Is this subject area something you’re interested in?
  • Is this course required for your module?
Troubleshooting Add/Drop

  • Make sure you are up to date on your fees—check your Statement of Account
  • Are you missing the pre-requisite to the course? Check the Academic Timetable to view listed prerequisites
  • Course overload? Students can’t enroll in more than 5 courses in a term without requesting a Course Overload through their Academic Advisor
  • For any difficulties with enrolment, please contact the Hive.

How To Add a Class

  1. Log into your Student Centre account.
  2. Select Enrol in Classes located under Planning.
  3. Under Add to Worksheet, enter the class number or use the Search feature to find the class you want to enrol in.
  4. Select Next beside the course you are searching for. This course is now in your Course Enrolment Worksheet.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 to continue adding classes to your worksheet.
  6. When complete, select Finish Enrolling in your Course Enrolment Worksheet to register for classes.

How to Drop a Class

  1. Log into your Student Centre account.
  2. Select Enrol in Classes located under Planning.
  3. Under the Drop tab, choose the classes you want to drop.
  4. Select Drop Selected Classes.
  5. Select Finish Dropping.
    Note: If a course is dropped after the add deadline but before the final drop deadline, the course will be recorded as a “WDN” which indicates a courses has been withdrawn without penalty. If a course is dropped after the final drop deadline, the course will be recorded as a failure.
